Another Story of Bali

Another Story of Bali

It has been so long since I have created this blog and never had enough time to represent the stories that have enriched my life with those gradient colors. But today was a day to remember because I was playing roving-stranger on my own island. The day was started because I had a promise to take a friend from Chile, called Laura, to explore the island while her stay in Bali until January. Our meeting in Ubud was a coincidence, but I don’t believe it, as I never did. However, we were occupied for our works and finally could organized a trip today. It was a no plan trip, however, we went south. We were on my scooter towards Kuta to fulfill her desire of its most famous beach, and as usual it was full. We took some photos and watch the mesmerizing scenes of the surfers that were drifting on gentle waves. when we decided to leave I found the sand had swept my sunglasses away because it might fell off from my unclicked longsleeve shirt’s pocket that I previously it hung up carelessly on a chopped branch of the tree. But the lost was not a problem because we could not find a comfort place to dwell and proceed ourselves to swim. So then I asked Laura to delay it until I took her to the southern cliffed-beach socalled Balangan.

New Year: My One Word for 2015 and Why I Can’t Leave 2014 Behind

New Year: My One Word for 2015 and Why I Can’t Leave 2014 Behind

Lily Ellyn

In Korea people don’t stay up until midnight to ring in the New Year. Instead, they get up in the middle of the night and they hike a mountain. They climb through the dark, snowy pre-dawn hours and when they reach the top they stand with their faces to the sky to greet the first sunrise of the New Year.

What a contrast to how we in the West often enter the New Year – stumbling out of bed at noon, tired and quite possibly hungover. For many, January 1st is a day of recovery. We spend New Year’s Eve celebrating the ending of something and the beginning of a new thing. We bombard the internet with reflections on the previous year. Even the less introspective among us take a moment to declare the past year, “the best” or “the hardest” or “the craziest” year of their lives.

Kecak is a classical Balinese dance and music drama that was developed in the 1930s in Bali, Indonesia. It is performed by a circle of at least 150 performers wearing checked cloth around their waists, percussively chanting “cak-cak-cak” and moving their hands and arms as the background of depicts a battle from epic hindu story, Ramayana.

Uluwatu Kecak Dance by tourguidebali

The dance was originally a trance ritual accompanied by male chorus. In 1930s, Walter Spies, a German painter and musician worked with the native artist Wayan Limbak was giving a great contribution of how Kecak designed in the taste of western tourist with several innovations and adaptations from both artists. They have made the dance well known by arranging performances by Balinese group touring internationally. Now kecak becomes the iconic dance as “A Must to See Performance” while your visit in Bali.

New Year 2015: Planning trip to Bali, Indonesia

A new year had come! A new hope, new plan, new destination, although they are not quite new but let say it NEW. We need to say it new for the hope sake. People always hoping something new in their life. People wake up everyday with a hope of new things. Imagine that you wake up everyday with a routine plus you have to do the households. Start your day with a cup of tea and end it with the same way. Looking at your photographs on the dusty table. A painting of tropical landscape is hanging on the plain white wall. Everything you have designed seems to be bothersome for your daily sightseeing. Now you need a break, you need a bit of unarranged activities, you are waiting for holiday!

In the previous year, you have been done many things but one that you will remember, one that you really want to be repeated is HOLIDAYS. It is always fun and bliss spending time on vacation, far away from home to see something different or new. The good thing about holidays is make you raise and live again. New place, climate, people, language, culture, culinary, etc. You step your feet in the land of expectation, you experience the calm breeze of tropical area or else you enjoy the rain pour into your body while you are walking around the rainforest and perhaps only stay in your hotel room witnessing the snow while having a sip of hot chocolate.

It might sound weird but for Balinese people having a snow is a dream holiday that they could ever imagine. However, If you are planning to come to Bali you will find nothing about snow. Bali is located just 8 degrees below the equator, indeed we are a tropical island that only have dry and wet season (wet: rain) but never snow. Alas, if you see some references like “Snowing in Bali,” the title of book about Bali, written by Australian author Kathryn Bonella. Yes, Bali becomes the topic of discussion these recent times. There are so many articles about the beauty of Bali, about its wonderful sceneries, about its unique culture, calm atmosphere, friendly people, and yet there are many of following bad issues revealed. Therefore, I would not explain you again about the beauties of the island. But tell me one place of no disorders, nowhere! Even the most dangerous place which has the reputation of the biggest narcotrafficking place like Colombia with its famous Pablo Escobar has a hidden beauty of its nature and landscape. It has a new slogan for its tourism tag line, “El riesgo es te quieras quedar”  which means “the risk is wanting to stay.” Indeed, the slogan is suitable for any place all over the world. Because the hidden core is always not so easy to find, it could not be seen by the surface. The core that always covered by layers. Ad hoc, a travel experience is really depeding on the traveller themselves. What you want to see in a place is depend on you.

Why have to come to Bali?

There are some facts about what you have read above. Bali is known for its magical beauty long time ago precede the bad issues come up later after it is laden with tourists. Bali has been a tourist destination since its first discover in 1920s by several gipsies and artists all over the world who was seeking for peace and beauty of the nature. Most of them are painters and writers who had contribute an immense amount of art work that indirectly, in such ways, were promoting this paradise island to the worldwide society. Thanks to them that have appriciated and helped the natives to preserve the exellences of Bali.

In line with the take and give philosophy people who could enjoy the real Bali are the people who was stayed with this vision, either the tourists or the native inhabitants. What you take is what you give, what you eat is what you are, and what you see is what you become. The life in Bali is a complex balance. We do sacred offerings, we over-smiling to others, we do arts, we pray to God and all its manifestations, we do cremation for the deads, we celebrate the festival, and we preserve the nature. All are in strict traditions to keep the balance. Therefore, do not expect an Eden without the devilish snake. God makes everything black and white or even colorful. So if you come to Bali with cognition, you will have an extraordinary experience.

Many people have experienced Bali and wrote about fascinating feedback. Not a few of them have decided to come back. Second to twenty-fifth time in Bali does not matter. Some have stayed for years and some never leave. So there are no reason to not come.

Hopefully this writting could encourage you to come.

Please write me an email for any questions about planning your trip to Bali. I would gladly acknowledge you with objective advices.

Cordially,
